Forbidden Kimberley Griffiths Little Books

Forbidden by Kimberly Griffiths Little was so captivating that I awoke early in the morning, while my family was still sleeping, so I could finish the last pages of this beautifully haunting tale.

The deserts and red canyons of the Middle East create a scenic backdrop for the story of young Jayden and her nomadic family. The ancient setting perfectly matches the lives and actions of the realistic, yet enthralling characters. The account tells of a time and place when a man's honor was in his word and when the bonds between friends and family trumped all else.

By the time innocent Jayden performs the ritualistic betrothal dance, the lives of her father's kin had long been intertwined with the family of her future husband. But her fate was not sealed until the death of the future prince left her in line to marry the next tribal heir. Though young women in her clan envy her future marriage, Jayden sees the truth about strong and willful Horeb, and wants nothing to do with him.

When tragedy leaves her alone in the desert, Jayden comes upon an injured stranger, mysterious and handsome Kadesh. His secrets are matched only by his compassion for the sorrowful girl who nurses him back to health, and in so doing captures his heart.

The story of Jayden's journey is a moving tale of family, honor, pride, selflessness, heart-wrenching deception and stirring love. It will keep you turning pages and wanting for more!

Forbidden Kimberley Griffiths Little Books Reviews

I've been looking forward to reading this book for a long time, and I was thrilled that it lived up to all my hopes for it. FORBIDDEN is a beautifully written story that will transport you back to the world of an ancient people who scraped out a harsh yet stunning life in Ancient Arabia. The writing is lyrical, the description fabulous, and the plots many twists and turns kept surprising me at every point. Just when I thought I knew where it was going, something changed and the thrill ride started all over again. I've written four novels set in Ancient Arabia, and Little's research was more than impressive, and more importantly it never got in the way of the story--instead the research created the fascinating framework of lives past. Rarely do I look forward to a sequel, but this one, I might have to beg an ARC from the author.
Firstly, was this the most riveting and wonderful book I've ever read? No. But it did hold my attention for the four hours it took me to read it and I want to read the next two books, so it gets four stars for being something enjoyable. I picked up my kindle around 4 am when I couldn't sleep and got through this with ease. I definitely would peg this as a "casual" read, not something to think terribly deeply about because the book isn't interested in making you contemplate riveting, deep subject matters. It just wants to tell you a story for your enjoyment.

I'm a history major and I've studied Ancient Mesopotamia, and some of the things are historically accurate while others are not. I won't bog this down with details about what exactly was and wasn't true, but just note that this wouldn't serve to genuinely educate you. It was definitely more about creating a new, exotic setting; I think this is why the author went for a desert tribe rather than setting it Babylonia or Assyria or Ur or something, since the lack of knowledge into the lives and specifics of outside peoples (like nomads and pastorialists) gave her more creative freedom to create Jayden and her world. I rarely see historical-setting novels go this far back in human civilization, so it was a refreshing change of setting. I would have liked the book to have more world-building, but I suppose for a book targeted a little too young for a college student wouldn't have the kind of complexity I expect from older-targeted fiction.

The romance wasn't incredibly deep. Not unbelievable or bad, just not deep and detailed and especially meaningful to the reader. I wouldn't really call this a love triangle, since it's established early on that Jayden wants to be with Kadesh while hating Horeb and that Horeb doesn't love Jayden, it's just about using her to suit his own struggle for power (in my book, a love triangle involves love in all three parties towards 1 or more of persons involved, not including one's self). Horeb is immediately painted as a creep who is power-hungry and violent and probably a misogynist, whereas Kadesh and Jayden seem to instantly be attracted to one another and, during the long traveling parts of the book, spend enough time together to fall in love, so I don't feel it was "insta-love" but rather that the author didn't want to waste space building up the romance/falling in love portions in great detail she just wanted them to be in love and together ASAP so she could work her way into the more action-filled parts of the story.

I did have some problems with how Jayden was very quick to shame priestesses and sexuality and revealing dresses. The author kind of made her into a girl with some internalized misogyny that doesn't know why she feels ashamed about dancing or being seen other than that someone told her it was something she should be ashamed of so she shames others and herself in spite of the little seed in her that wants to be sexual and sensual and not be demonized for what she wears or who she kisses, rather than making her into a girl with high morals/values (which I assume was the author's intent.) The language was also very modern and not especially complex or beautiful, so it's clear this was written in the 21st century. It's not a major flaw, but it's always nice when an author can find that balance between old enough to make you really feel the era, yet modern enough you don't feel like you're reading Shakespeare and need an annotated version to let you know that when Hamlet said "Are you honest?" to Ophelia he was asking "Are you a virgin?" The pace is pretty quick, and I'm glad there's more books because if this had cut off for real as it does I would have thrown the book and said, "What a waste of time!" as I read books to find out what happens, not be left to sit and imagine the rest of the story on my own.

Overall, it was a decent read and worth the $1.99 I paid for it digitally. I'll probably invest in the physical copies.
I heard the author speak a few months ago at a panel and she described this novel as "sexy," which I think is the perfect way to sum it up.
Even though I'm in my early 20s, I'm a huge consumer of YA fiction, and I'm so glad that this novel did NOT fall into a lot of the tropes of the genre that crop up over and over again.
The pacing was incredible-- there's a big emotional hit right at the beginning that had me almost in tears, and then the rest of the novel moves along from there. Even though the characters make trips through the desert, they were used for character development and to move the plot along, not just boring descriptions of somebody's hike (which is something I've found in a lot of YA novels... if I wanted "A Walk in the Woods," I'd read that).
The narrator/protagonist, Jayden, is someone you can sympathize with, and she narrates her life/experience with honesty and clarity.
What I loved the most about this book, besides the setting, is how the author uses dance and Jayden's connection with dance as an outlet for her emotions. As a dancer myself, I loved seeing dance being treated 'properly' in a novel-- as an important and cathartic part of someone's life!
Beautiful book, I would definitely recommend this to adults as well as teens. I'm glad I don't have to wait too long for the second one!
