As a coming of age novel set in the mid twentieth century Scorpio Rising is complex, well written and compelling. The two main protagonists, Alexander Ivanov an American of Russian immigrant parents is being reared by his single mother, who is a part time prostitute. Living and growing up in Brooklyn he aspires to be an architect and move to Manhattan. He has set his goals early and works hard to attain them. Emotionally abused by his mother he has a skewed vision of male/female relationships which lead him to be uncaring and harsh when it comes to women.
Brigitte Dartois is also abused, but in her case the abuser is her step-father who takes advantage of her violently when her mother is not at home. Afraid to ask for help she endures the abuse for several years until her mother catches her step-father in the act. Instead of supporting her daughter the mother kicks her out of the house leaving her, at 16, to fend for herself in Paris, France. Finding a job and a fatherly figure to help her Brigitte thinks she has found the key to happiness and success. Little does she understand that she has traded one abuser for another. As she finds the strength to leave her abuser she must find her way alone.
As both Brigitte and Alexander come of age and become successful in their chosen fields destiny brings them together and they meet in Paris.
The story is good, the writing well done and the plotting makes sense in this interesting, complex and character driven novel. The author has done a good job of bringing the protagonists to life and given us people we can believe in and want to follow. The storyline is realistic, the dialogue crisp and clean and the settings well described. All around this is a good novel and one I would recommend to my friends.

Scorpio Rising Monique Domovitch 9781463790738 Books Reviews
This novel is powerful and well written that follows two major characters. Alex Ivanov, raised by a poor mother in Brooklyn, NY, dreams of going to Manhattan where he becomes rich and successful as an architect. The other character is Brigitte Dartois, raised in Paris. At 16 years of age she is repeatedly raped by her stepfather and escapes to live on her own. She, too, has goals of being independent and able to take care of herself through her own efforts. The avenues each take are suspenseful as well as inspiring, told extremely well by the author. Overall, the novel is intoxicating to the reader and I'm sure the sequel will be also spellbinding. Plan on having the next novel, "The Sting of the Scorpio" on hand to read.
(Review originally written and posted on Goodreads on March 27, 2012).
I went into this expecting a crime thriller, based on the name, and then a romance, based on the description, and what I got was a work of literary fiction consisting of an engaging story and intriguing characters.
Given the time period and locations of Scorpio Rising, it gave off an enjoyable 'Mad Men' vibe with much of that same ambition, drama, and sex. Come to think of it, 'Scorpio Rising' would make an interesting TV show.
The characters were very well-written, especially the main characters, Brigitte and Alex. Brigitte is a perfect blend of strength and fragility, while Alex is charming and driven. Although it may seem unlikely that an architect from New York would cross paths with an artist in Paris, Monique Domovitch lays out the plot in a way that makes it seem not only believable but destined that these two will come to share their lives.
When you purchase 'Scorpio Rising' you may as well go ahead and buy the sequel, The Sting of The Scorpio at the same time because as soon as the first book ends, you're going to want to jump right into the second one to see where the story goes.
Funny thing about this book - I already had bought it and it was at about my waist in my TBR pile that is now taller than I am. And I'm just topping out at 165cm, if I stand up straight. And I didn't realize it was in that pile until I went to do a search for the book information to write this review. As always, I was provided an eBook copy by the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.
The majority of the book is two concurrent but very different story lines, also done in two very different voices. The book starts with Alex Ivanov at age 12 son of a Russian immigrant mother, absent father and living in Brooklyn. Quickly we are taken to meet Brigitte Dartois, a young girl in France with a new and abusive stepfather and a cold and removed mother.
From two different perspectives, we see the effects of that early abuse or indifferent behaviour and how it shapes the relationships and attitudes of these two young people, as they grow into adulthood and need to find their way in the world. Alex wants nothing more than to create and design buildings that will sit as monument to his talent. Brigitte is an artist with a bold, emotive style that utilizes everyday objects to create emotion in those who see her paintings.
The story was beautifully written, with a solid and distinct voice for each character that reinforces the characters we are coming to know. While through a series of coincidences, the characters meet, although it was a rather predictable outcome, it came on faster and with less introspection on all sides, when the history of the characters is considered. The ending felt a bit rushed, and while it is leading nicely into the sequel, that transition felt as if it was more of a "I should" decision by the author rather than asking "Should I ?". I almost feel as if the book could have ended without the second to last section as a lead in to the next volume. And that, is why this was a 4.5 star book for me, rather than a full on 5.
