The story of Kennett Bayard Taylor 9781171729907 Books

Sort of a cross between Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Hardy! Bayard Taylor was a modestly successful literary critic, and I think this novel is shaped as much by his love of the landscape of Chester County, PA, as by any literary ambition. The novel was originally published in 1898. I won’t claim that it is great literature—though I think it is an overlooked work as well-wrought as many a classic. On the one hand, its style was too “quaint” for the era in which it was written; on the other hand, if it had been written a generation or two later, when style itself became an artifice, it might have had the same kind of following as, say, John Barth’s The Sotweed Factor. And if you grew up in the rolling landscape of Chester County, PA, with the highwayman Sandy Flash hiding in the hedgerows of your imagination, then you are in for a treat!

The story of Kennett Bayard Taylor 9781171729907 Books Reviews

I've lived and worked in a few cities, but not for long. Most of my life has been lived in small towns--some very small. Kennett is such a town. As happens in small towns, there will be some people who move in and take the lay of the land and decide to gift the local populous with the benefit of all their culture and education. Taylor's sometimes condescending tone suggests he may have been such a citizen. He is revered there still, and the local library, last time I was home, still bears his name. His writing style tends toward the ponderous. It's educational and soporific. For those who don't know that term, let me translate this is a good book to peruse if you're having trouble sleeping.
A historical novel of life in a small town in the mid 1800s. This is the story that I grew up with. We heard of this at the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library during summer reading programs. I lived across the road from Cedarcroft, Bayard Taylor's home. Very interesting tale fro me.
