Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Such Nonsense! An Anthology Carolyn Wells Books

This is an incredible collection of some of the most hilarious English/American short poetry penned in the 19th century (and early 20th). It contains hundreds of entries written by dozens of authors, some famous, most obscure, all displaying here a studied skill in wordplay conjoined to a childish sense of humor. If you enjoy a good limerick, ballads about cannibals, horrible puns, scientific mockeries, pure Mother-goose style nonsense, literary parodies, and all other manner of poetic fun skillfully delivered in every meter under the sun, this book is for you.

Some sections of this anthology committed me to the floor in laughter. My favorite part is the "compendium" of re-writings of the classic "I Never Saw A Purple Cow" poem in the style of famous English poets; to anyone familiar with the writings of Milton, Keats, Kipling, etc., it's a stitch. The rendering of Carroll's "Jabberwocky" into Latin, German, and a football brawl is priceless. And, of course, just silly things, like poems entitled "The Dyspeptic Cannibal", "A Strike Among Poets", "How A Girl Was Too Reckless Of Grammar By Far", and "The Romance Of The Carpet". Most every entry is a gem.

A few caveats: the only thing that has changed about this book in its reprinting appears to be the cover. This is an old book, and there are several poems and illustrations that are definitely not politically correct, particularly with reference to African-Americans. Nothing vulgar, however. And, since the new reprinted edition only changed the cover, do try to obtain an older edition if you can. The new floppy yellow cover just doesn't have the same character as an old, gray hardcover, even if it is guaranteed to be in better shape. This is a quaint old book written by and for nutty English majors (largely), and a gaudy yellow softcover just doesn't do it justice.

Such Nonsense! An Anthology Carolyn Wells Books Reviews

This book was purchased to introduce my 8-year-old granddaughter to some of the classical nonsense verses I grew up with. It arrived today and I immediately turned to one of my favorites, Charles Edward Carryl's "The Post Captain." I was disappointed to see that the very first line of the poem was mis-printed; the actual first line "Post Captain at The Needles and commander of the crew" was replaced with a line from a later stanza, which made no sense at all. I can correct that for my granddaughter, but I wonder how many other such errors I will find. Still, this will be a useful reminder of my dad declaiming these beloved nonsense verses to our delighted giggles.
