For almost the entire duration of this book I loved it. I thought the mystery was well developed and interesting, I liked the heroine, and the question of whether the hero was or wasn't her real enemy I found to be intriguing. I liked it enough that I was even angry at the most helpful critical review that almost stopped me from buying the book. And then I hit about 80%, and I was abruptly done. Just, DONE.

The short version is that the heroine is an idiot. She spends the ENTIRE book not knowing what to believe about anyone or anything, even when presented with plenty of evidence to make the determination, particularly toward the end of the book. At the place where I abruptly stopped engaging in the story she had a long-lost someone return from her past with all sorts of information and she still, even then, couldn't pull herself together. It was utterly unbelievable. It was one of those moments where the author wanted a specific ending, and in order to facilitate that ending she forced her heroine into idiocy. Nobody, absolutely nobody, is that. Stupid. I did finish the book, but the last 20% took me 4 days, and was met with a lot of annoyance and derision.

This book had my full attention from beginning to end. I loved the characters, hoped for the romance to take hold, and really didn't like the bad guys. There are many twists in the story and Eleanor, like those listening to politicians today, had to deal/sort out many alternative truths until she found out the truth. This is a story about finding your voice, trusting your intuition and acting on it. It's about figuring out where your loyalties lie, trusting actions over tales, being brave, and the path choices we make. I recommend this book to YA and beyond.
I enjoyed this little book. It is an easy, quick read. The story is good, characters are developed, and writing is thought out. Excellent read for a car, plane or train ride. I read it over the weekend while my husband watched football. I give it 5 stars for being a sweet little romance. I liked the characters. A sequel would be nice. Most of the time I read history or Alice Hoffman. I enjoy science fiction also. This isn't my usual read. So, for this story to have captured my interest is something good.
Lady Eleanor de Lacy finds herself betrothed to the Welsh king, Brach Goch, as part of a peace treaty. Her father and Brach have been lifelong enemies and Eleanor has been offered as a peace token. She arrives in Wales with preconceived notions about her betrothed. But soon she learns that everything she was previously told about the Welsh king was not the truth. It takes her almost losing her king to realize that she had fallen in love with him. This is a very well written story with a lot of twists and turns and also some mystery.
This story was hard for me to put down, I became totally engrossed in it. While I would have liked more romance and longing between Brac and Eleanor, the feelings and doubts they have about each other are realistic. This wasn't love or lust at first sight. She is young and has led a sheltered life, having been fed cruel lies about Brac. I like how she matures and discovers her father's treachery. She realizes Brad is a good man and makes her feelings known. It was a sweet romance and I loved the paranormal aspect. This is a unique, fun story.
This is a really good book; full of very compelling, very human characters — and Eleanor most of all. She's a young woman, given by a cruel father to an enemy king as the price of peace. She is left with her betrothed in a foreign land, surrounded by enemies, speaking a language no one understands. There, she finds a mystery she must solve, and people she must protect. Will she have the courage to learn the truth?

Julie Daines weaves a story filled with anger and fear, tenderness and courage, wisdom and wonder. And she makes the reading sweetly fulfilling.
This book is very different from my usual choices. I'm not generally drawn to medieval period stories, and especially not ones with witches and supernatural elements. I must say, however, that I truly enjoyed this book. Somehow the superstitious aspects fit well...it was what they believed, after all. The writing was good and the research well done. The language was obviously more contemporary and not remotely authentic, but having read literature from that time period, I can say unequivocally that I would not have enjoyed the story as much if it had been. I have also read some medieval-based stories where the contemporary authors have tried to insert more authentic language and I did not like those books nearly as much as this one. The language matters a great deal to me in Regency fiction, but there is a point going backwards where it just isn't practical anymore for contemporary readers. I highly recommend this book.
