This wonderful book is a story of love, of man and dog. Bunkie was a yellow lab who graced the life of the author for about 15 years. In that time, Chuck had two marriages and Bunkie played an interesting role in the end of one and beginning of another. The dog also became the buddy of Chuck's dad in his dying days.

I loved this book. It brought back so many memories of my own dog, Winnifred, a springer spaniel. Winnie was actually my oldest daughter's dog, but in due course she became a family dog beloved by us all. For me, she became a running dog. We had a track of about 5 miles through residential and commercial areas. There were small forests and a lake. She never needed a leash. Winnie would run at my side or just in front. When we came to the first forest, she would disappear into the woods, swim in the lake, and always reappear at exactly the same place coming out of the second stand of trees. She was always wet, sometimes smelled like skunk, and occasionally had a dead varmint in her mouth proud of the trophy. When we were within a quarter mile of home, she knew the race was on. Dropping anything in her mouth, Winnie was off like a rocket running with all her might. At the finish line, she would turn and sit, tongue hanging out of her mouth and gloating at beating the whimpy human (me). In time, age caught up with Winnie until her hips could not stand the strain. Then she became blind and deaf. Another dog, a young german shepard appropriately named Shadow, would walk between Winnie and the swimming pool so the older dog would not fall in and drown. One winter night, it was her time to move on, in the hands of a kind vet. I look forward to the day when I can have another running dog, when I have time for us to train each other.

The Bunkie Story is a heartfelt tribute by man to the role that a dog can play in a happy life, especially in times of unhappiness. Constant companion, unequivocal love, and adoration, in both directions, are the hallmarks of the relationship. If you love dogs or the simple statement of emotion, you will treasure this small, intense book.

It ends with the interesting question of whether your dog will remember you when you meet again in Heaven. Perhaps, the faithful friend would moved along first will be the guide for the man into eternity.
