The Mystery in the Pirate Oak is a marvelous children's book that I have kept and read and reread many many times over the past 30+ years. It is a book about right and wrong and about how you should or should not treat your neighbors. It is a mystery by an artist Helen Orton who has written several other mysteries that rate high on the chart with myself and my children. I kept the book from my childhood purchase from Scholastic Books so that I could someday read it to my children. My boys are now ages 15 and 24 and did enjoy the book almost as much as I. I highly recommend it to any person that is in a nostalgic mood or just in a mood for light reading. It is entertaining for all.
I will always remember her mysteries that I first read at age 9 or 10 as the springboard to a life-long love of reading. I will always be grateful to her. I'm pleased to read the reviews above. Now, 55 years later, I need to reread her!
In 4th grade I won our class spelling bee and was then allowed to choose from a selection of books the teacher had available. I remember being so excited about picking out any book I wanted. I chose this one and couldn't wait to get home to read it. I lost track of how many times I read the book over the years. Even read it to my daughter when she was young. Young siblings helping an older neighbor and solving a mystery. It's a simple story, but a pleasant read. Back when children spent their days outdoors or doing simple things. No tv, ipod, computer games....just plain old fun! I highly recommend this book to read to your children.
I love children's lit, particularly from a bygone era. This story is just that. The mystery isn't really much of a mystery and the tale is pretty pedestrian. I enjoyed that atmosphere and time period. This is my first book by this author and it was good enough that I'll try another. However, I hope the "mystery" aspect is a bit better in her other books.
