Taltos takes the Mayfair Witch story on a tangent that is not so much a wrapping up of the trilogy as it is taking a different direction. The book is mostly about the Taltos and their history. A new character is introduced, an ancient Taltos named Ashlar. He is drawn to the Mayfair witches and the possibilities they represent. The corruption of the Talamasca takes up a good part of the plot - an unnecessary and annoying plot device over the last two novels that just further obfuscates things and doesn't add anything to the story that couldn't have been brought around more naturally. The Mayfair characters are pushed to the periphery of their own story. Rowan and Michael do very little in this book besides be around when other things are happening or other stories are being told. Mona is given a lot to do but her character is quite different from book 2. She has gone from cute little beribboned girl in book 1, to precocious teenage femme fatale in book 2, to helpless victim of circumstance in book 3. A new Mayfair named Mary Jane comes out of the swamp and takes on the role that Mona had in the previous novel of precocious teenage vamp. Morrigan is another new character, and is really just awful, and not in a compelling way.

Anne Rice is a good writer, and Ashlar's long exposition of the Taltos history is the best part of this book (though not equal to the Mayfair saga of the first novel), but the bringing about of this seems clumsy and out of nowhere. Like, it literally goes like, "Hi, I am a rich Taltos named Ashlar who has been around since time began and now I will tell you my story Rowan and Michael! Also I will solve the Talamasca problem because I am a nice guy! You'll let me know if you ever run across a female Taltos won't you?" Ashlar owns an internationally known company that makes famous "Ashlar" branded toys but no one in previous books ever said anything like, "Oh Ashlar, like the dolls!" when they learned Lasher's real name. Oh well. Just gives the impression that the trilogy evolved due to the success of the original novel but was not following a master plan. There is also a lot of laziness and indulgence in this book. You get the feeling reading it that Anne Rice really likes Claridge's of London and has started a hobby of collecting dolls and puts these characteristics onto her characters.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, but by the time it ends I didn't really care anymore if the Taltos take over the world. Doesn't seem likely. I know these characters come up again in future novels where the vampires and witches and Taltos join stories. I read one of these books and it was written almost like this book didn't happen - Mona is desperately ill due to childbirth and is an enemy of Rowan's. None of this was set up in this novel at all, in fact it seems like it was the opposite. Anyways, I guess Anne Rice has reached a place where she can write what she wants and people will buy it but it doesn't make for great reading always.

Taltos Lives of the Mayfair Witches Anne Rice Anne Rice Tim Curry 9780679436546 Books Reviews

I have always loved the Mayfair Witch trilogy. This book, is good, but the least favorite of the three.
I tremendously enjoy reading about the lives of the witches and their ancestry/history. This book focuses too much on the Taltos for my taste.
I longed to get to the end of this book but I also wanted it to last forever....like a Taltos ;)
I enjoyed this novel. The tale is a great ending to the story of the Mayfair witches.
This disappointing end to the Mayfair books just doesn't fit. It has some characters from the earlier books, but none of the fun. The witches are almost entirely missing, and the ones that are there don't do very much. Most of the book is the story of Ashlar, which is not as exciting as you might have thought it would be. Mona does some very un-Mona-like things which make no sense, but are maybe to advance the plot, and then the whole thing ends without a resolution, as if Rice simply got tired of writing about these folks.
After reading 'The Witching Hour' & 'Lasher', I couldn't wait delve into 'Taltos', the third in this series by Anne Rice. Once again I was not at all disappointed! Prior to reading this trilogy, I had never before read anything written by Anne Rice, however she has most definitely assured herself a place near the very top of my short list of my all time favorite authors! Ms Rice makes it nearly possible to believe that there could actually be such a family of witches, with an equally long history of incest, murder, wealth and power, very much like the Mayfair family, living in the beautiful, yet somewhat spooky Garden District of New Orleans. I highly recommend reading all three of these books, in the order they were written and meant to be read, *if you dare and don't scare easily* although, IMHO they are also good enough to read any one of these books singly, without reading either of the other two books!
Very good book! I felt that it did leave a few threads unfinished. Haven't read Blackwod Farm or Blood Canticle yet, and I hope the loose ends will tie up there. You feel as if you are in the story with the characters. Rowan remains the cold aloof personality she has always been, but I can at least feel some sympathy for Lasher after reading this book. I absolutely loved the character of Yuri. He is so adorable and tragic. And of course Ashlar is very seductive as expected. I think bringing him into the tale really helped fans to have a better understanding of Lasher and his behavior. As Ashlar tells his tale, much of what seemed bewildering about Lasher is suddenly quite understandable. I think the way she ended the book was hauntingly beautiful. Some previews of this book describe it as being "out of steam" or otherwise not as good as the other books. If you skim read then it might seem that way to you, but if you take the time with this book and really understand what Anne is trying to say to you, I think you will find it just as alluring as all the others.
I hesitated, but then decided to read this, despite a few negative reviews. I'm glad I did.. It is very well worth the adventurous read.. It brings answers to so many questions in the previous two stories. It was nice to read justice measured out.. Nice to see love prevail and happiness a possibility for Michael & Rowan.. I just wish a bit more at the ending.. Thank you Anne Rice...
I am enjoying reading this Series. Not what I normally read. It is not a relaxing go to bed kind of book. It is more intense and kept me awake. It was a nice change for me. I bought "The Silver Wolf" written by Alice Borchardt for My next read. It was written by Anne Rice's sister , with some help from Anne as I understand it. So I am looking forward to reading that also. I do feel Anne used the word Indeed to much. It may have just been the way the character was speaking though. I will check out some of her other books in the future.
